What is the Alexander Technique?

Back pain, neck and shoulder tension, breathing difficulties and many stress-related disorders are often the consequences of misusing the body during activity. Over time, this misuse turn into a habit and we become so accustomed to the resulting tension that, unless we are in pain, we rarely notice it.

The Alexander Technique is a method for identifying and letting go of these unwanted habits. This allows you to use the appropriate amount of muscular effort for any activity you engage in whether simple such as walking or complex like playing a musical instrument or practicing a martial art.

The technique is not yoga, massage or religion. It is a 100-year old proven neuromuscular re-education method.

You will first learn to identify habitual behavior that can cause Musculoskeletal Disorders(MSDs), and then, through a skilled teacher’s hands, you move with greater ease and balance. With time, your sensory awareness becomes more accurate.

My clients reported a decrease in pain and discomfort, greater freedom of movement, improved posture and balance, appropriate control of muscle tension and an overall sense of well being.

The technique is not limited to the workplace or applications to medical rehabilitation.

The technique is taught in dozens of performing centers and training schools around the world which include:

  • The Julliard School
  • The Yale School of Drama
  • The New England Conservatory of Music
  • The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art
  • The Royal College of Music
  • UCLA School of Theater
  • Academy of Art University (San Francisco)

Musicians, dancers, actors, athletes, martial artists, pilates and yoga teachers/students can greatly benefited from learning the principles of the Alexander Technique to enhance their performances.
